The Fascination with Barefoot Running
By Sid Dw
Barefoot running has been around for ages. After all, that is how we started running. The concept of running shoes is surprisingly new and many runners, new or old, seldom realize this fact. However, here is a more fascinating fact - injuries to runners has been on the rise throughout this transformation. One of the most basic requirements of any running technique is that it should avoid injuries. Why then do people spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on running shoes? This partly explains the fascination with barefoot running. You can see them in all parts of the world in all kinds of climate. They prefer the "natural" method of running that doesn't involve the use of shoes. They report fewer injuries and many elite runners have reported to greatly benefit from running barefoot after an injury. Injuries can be serious for both beginners and professionals and can end your running career. A lot of good guides on running tips for beginners stress this fact. The book "Born to Run" popularized this notion of barefoot running and it became even more popular. A recent article in the New York Times titled "The Once and Future Way to Run" again brought the debate to the forefront. Christopher McDougall does an in-depth study of barefoot running and gives ample examples that even the skeptics might convert. The most "natural" way to run, after all, is barefoot and the article mentions research into the running ways of primitive tribes that have not yet been polluted by the modern ideas on running which follow the age-old running traditions. Even from an early biological perspective, humans are not the fastest of runners. However, they can endure for a very long time. Humans can run for a much longer time than most animals, which is also how we survived hunting animals that were several times faster than us but that couldn't keep up given the longer distances that the hunter would chase them. The idea of endurance is thus central to running. There has been a tremendous increase in the number of people who are taking up running. If you need proof, over 99% of the people who participated in the latest New York marathon completed the race. If you need a spot in the event, you'll probably have to book a spot almost an year in advance. There are several small running groups in most areas that practice barefoot running. It is worthwhile to check them out and see if this technique works for you. After all, it doesn't cost a lot to try running without any gear. However, if you do end up trying to run barefoot, be very careful with the weather and other types of injuries you might potentially end up with. A good start would be running barefoot on softer ground, like the beach, just so you are comfortable with the idea of barefoot running.
